Yep, there are many different things that can be used to cover the wires in an installation, including what has already been mentioned, and several other ideas like Nomex or Kevlar tubing, or even electrical tape.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the use of some wire protection ideas has become rather excessive, like putting five layers of protection over a wire bundle. Hmmm... I fully understand that all wiring needs protection, and that we can do a better job of it than the OEMs do, but more isn't necessarily better. The wire protection is supposed to be there to protect the wires from chafing and potential damage during normal use of the vehicle. Pretty much no amount of wire covering will fully protect a wire in a catastrophic crash. And, we can't possibly protect all the wires in the vehicle to that extreme anyway. And even if we could, it would require a significant increase in the room taken up by the wire (because of the additional diameter of the bundles), and a little extra vehicle weight. Also, if you need to trouble shoot the wiring, getting to it through all those layers of "protection" will be a real drag. Also, why is it more important to protect the system wiring than the vehicle wiring? We get extra points for extra protection on system wiring.
